Urban Terror Server: 64 slot madness!

A couple of days ago I came across a pretty strange thing when I looked at my server list.

64 players slot

64 players slot

I thought: What? 64 Players? Is that possible?
In fact Urban Terror has a maximum of 32 players possible at the same time, if the 33th player connected the server would have crashed.
I was surprised to see 40+ people in this server and I decided to talk with the Administrator: Emanuele from WarriorTeam.

We discovered that wasn’t possible. But we found that some guy managed to get 64 players at the same time by editing the code of Urban Terror. Unfortunatly it was for Windows and we were looking for something for Linux. After a few days of experiments we had a perfect 64 players server up and running!

That’s kind of cool. I was concerned about hosting solutions.

We initially tried to host it by ourselves, but we didn’t found a provider that had enough bandwith. So we rented a PC in a Datacenter in Germany on a 100Mbps backbone. It works fine and allows us to host external websites. So we are kinda sub-renting the server so it’s paying itself.

Good.

So how was my experience with the WarriorTeam server?

To tell you the truth the first time you play in it is plenty of fun. I was actually laughing, it was fun like the first time I played Superman CTF. But all that shines it’s not gold. When I played on the server there where 44 players on and Capture the Flag mode. It wasn’t a huge number but my framerate was always between 25 and 30. Usually on my MacBook Pro I have 90-100 fps constantly. Also my ping was around 100 instead of around 50 so playing wasn’t that fluid.

Look at the players list!

Look at the players list!

There where only a few people intrested in actually Capture the Flag, a lot of them where there just to shoot at random I guess. There where a lot of campers, some AFKs and even some cheaters.
Unfortunatly no votes at all. This includes no cyclemap vote, no nextmap vote but more important no kick vote.
In huge servers like this, kick vote is very important IMHO, also since there isn’t an admin 24/7.
I really hope they will fix this soon.
The choice of map wasn’t bat, obviously they had to choose just huge maps and often I had to download them since I’ve never seen them before.
The server is italian but I found more players from outside Italy than actually italians. The main language spoken in the server was english so it’s good for anyone who gets a good ping.

So is it bad?

No it isn’t. It’s for casual games. More experienced players will come and play just once, but for everyone else is good for casual game and brainless shooting.
It was fun playing there but I think I will stick with my good old Team Survivor servers and play there just occasionally.

Overall

The WarriorTeam server is a pretty nice idea, fun to play the first time but due to the lack of voting, low fps and high ping, chances are you are not gonna play there that much. Nice for casual gamers, not for more experienced players. Nice try though.
