The do’s and dont’s of your first game

So you downloaded Urban Terror, installed it and you are ready to play huh?
Well there are a few tips that can help you having a good time with your first game, especially if you never played any FPS online.

General tip: Be kind, be humble, do not insult other player or accuse them of cheating. Don’t spam or radio spam. Try to have fun and the will to learn.

DO’S

1. Choose a pick-and-play type of game

There are a few different game modes in Urban Terror. You should choose one that let you enter the fry quickly without getting bored. In the server list search for “Free for All”, “Team Deathmatch” or “Capture the Flag” (always look for low pings servers only). Free for All is basically the classic deathmatch: if it moves, shoot! In Team Deathmatch you have to kill as much opponents as possible. Capture the Flag is like a Team Deathmatch but the goal of the game is to score points by capturing the enemy flag. All these game modes allows you to respawn quickly and experiment with weapons and equipment. If the server is in your country is better.

2. Map your keys before beginning

Lots of players enter the game without knowing what each keys does. Before choosing a server go to the controls options, look at them and eventually re-map them. Especially remember where the healing button is (default: Q) and where the sprint button is (default: E).

3. Move, Move and Move

Everything can happen but you still have to move. When you shoot always move randomly to try avoid bullets. Look at the other players and the way they move and jump and try to replicate their movements.

4. Shoot, Shoot, Shoot

If you see an enemy, shoot! But try to make small bursts with every weapon, and always try to aim for the torso or for the head. If you’re low on bullets (less than 20) find some cover and reload (default: R). Always try to have your weapons ready to fire, but remember: you have a limited number of mags. This is not like Call of Duty where you have a certain amount of ammo like 200 and an unlimited number of mags, wich means you can basically always reload, even if you shooted a couple of rounds. Generally you have 3 mags at the beginning so save your ammo!

5. Stick with someone

If there is a good teamate try to follow him. Remember to keep a good distance to let him move freely. Watch his movements and behaviors, heal him if he needs to (default:Q) and try to finish the enemys he can’t.

DONT’S

1. Don’t camp

Camping means staying in one position for a long time shooting the enemys that walks by. As a form of respect to the other players you should never camp. Always moves with every weapon and if you stop do it for a small period of time (less than 10 seconds). Campers are hated by the players and they often end up kicked.

2. Don’t use weird weapons

You should stay away from certain weapons until you get familiar with the game. Every beginner tries the Negev, I’ve never seen one beginner not trying it. The fact is that the Negev is not that good, and even experienced players don’t use it. Stay away from it. Also stay away from the H&K grenade launcher. Is very hard to use, has very low ammo, can harm teamates and generally is one of the less-used weapons in the game.

3. Stay away from PSG-1 and SR-8

There is a small sniper inside every one of us. But starting with a sniper rifle is not a good thing. It can force you to camp if you don’t know how to use them and you won’t do that much anyway. Sniper rifles are for experienced players, wait until you get familiar with the game.

4. Stay away from weird equipment

Definatly do not use the Visor. It can help you detect foes but sometimes it results in accidental teamkill. Also for now leave there extra-ammo and Medikit. Try to choose instead Helmet, Kevlar, Laser or Silencer.

5. Don’t block

When following a teamate it can happen that he runs out of ammo, or he’s low on life and he wants to get away. If you’re in his way like in a corridor or near a door it can be very frustrating. It’s a common error even with experienced players where there are a lot of players in each team.

11. Have fun

Remember to have fun with Urban Terror! Learn watching others and be humble! Feel free to experiment with the weapons and the equipment by yourself.

  1. 8 ways to dominate a Free for All match I just love Free for All. It's plenty of fun, especially with lots of players in the server. Usually I play on Free for All servers when my favorites one are full but I found it to be very usefull to improve aim, and overall skills. Here are some tips to dominate the server. Usually there is a kill limit instead of a time limit, so you have to rush to victory before anyone else. Let's take a look to some advices....
  2. Capture the Flag Basics Who doesn't love the tension when both flags are missing, and you're desperately trying to get your's back before the enemy does? In Urban Terror, CTF is an extremely challenging gametype with little space for mistakes. Here's a guide on how to make the most out of the round!...

    Nice and quick guide!

Can I have some pictures too? :P

Another suggestion: WATCH THE TUTORIAL DEMO! It really helps beginners, and is rather quick.
To view it go into Demos (MainMenu) and hit the Tutorial. Note that hitting/clicking any button will make you end the tutorial.

    GL&HF!

I don’t know, the fact is that I saw so many players kicked for camping in a lot of europe servers. Any gamemode: CTF, TS, TDM. Usually they are beginners who grab the Negev and hide somwhere shooting at people that passes by.

Newcomers might also want to stay away from smoke grenades until they can learn how to use them responsibly.

Lots of inexperienced players end up dropping smoke grenades within their own spawns. This does nothing but anger, upset and frustrate your teammates, and can encourage the other team to spawn kill you and your teammates.

Smoke can be an effective tool once you learn how to use it properly.

  4. GingerbreadMan says:

I would not say that being low on bullets is less than twenty. More like less than 10.

  5. Durandal says:

+1 Schuby. smoking your own spawn needlessly is just infuriating.

On that same token… just because someone got into your spawn and shot you doesn’t mean you need to respawn and throw HE Grenades at him. Please for the love all that is made of chocolate… do not throw HE Grenades into your own spawn!!

It is not now, nor never will it be, “for the lulz” to intentionally kill or wound your team mates.

I disagree with the article a bit… an experienced player in CERTAIN circumstances with a silencer… can wreak controlled havoc with a negev. But if you’re new and just spraying everything you can see from your camping spot… the most likely scenario is that you will attract the attention of an admin because so many cheaters use the negev exclusively.

New player, we have been playing longer than you and have more experience… hence… we will kill you more. Don’t get discouraged… you are welcome to come practice, enjoy the game, and improve yourself. But please… PLEASE… every death is not “noob @$%^@#$ is haxxors!!!”… no.. you just suck… practice more and stfu.

The radio is not as much fun as you think it is.

Yes… we know how to get the special hat we’re wearing… if you’re lucky and ask nicely… someone might tell you. Once you’re told or referred to “google funred funblue”… you don’t need to ask 45 more times.

Everyone likes to win. That doesn’t mean switching to the team with the higher score every 2 minutes is acceptable…. stop it.

I don’t care what your rationale is… don’t download cheats… even to “try them out”. You will be caught and then banned from every server possible. UrT is almost unique in it’s community aspect. Cheats are a short ticket to never getting to play again.

Totally agree. BTW I’ve been planning a post on how to use the Negev effectively for a long time :D
