Radio and message binds you should use

There are a couple of messages you must be ready to send to your teamates anytime. Using the radio manually is almost impossible, so it is crucial to bind some radio messages. I feel that having the F1-F10 keys for this is quite uncomfortable. If you have read my previous post about key binds you should know that I have scattered my weapons all around WASD and left the keys 1 through 0 free. I used them for radio binds and let’s see what they do.

Two critical binds

The two most important radio binds are “Enemy Spotted” and “Enemy Heard”, wich means that you have seen an enemy or heard some noises from probably an enemy.
I binded “Enemy Spotted” on the key number 3, right over WASD, so I can quickly inform my teamates of where I am and where are the enemies.
In fact thanks to a little keyword, it communicates the position of both you (since is a team message) and your crosshair.
I binded “Enemy Heard” on the tilde key, right over TAB, so if I hear something i just look at the minimap and if there are no teamates near, it means that it must be an enemy.

The obvius bind

The obvius radio bind is calling for a medic. I binded “I need a medic” on number 5 right over R so I can easily call for help if I’m badly wounded.

How to bind a radio call

To bind a radio call open up the console (with tilde key on Windows, with SHIFT+ESC on Mac) and write the following:

\bind [KEY] ut_radio X X

Where X X are the numbers you would enter to say it normally via the radio dialog box (Default key: U). Example:

\bind 5 ut_radio 3 3

Will result in “I Need a Medic!”.

You can add text to customize your message further. For example:

\bind 5 ut_radio 3 3 PLZ Bring me some MED cuz I’m $health !!!11!!1!

Will result in “PLZ Bring me some MED cuz I’m Badly Hurt!!!11!!1!”.

$health is just one of the many variables you can use to customize your messages. They will print several things on the screen like:

$health – Your current health status (string value).
$crosshair – The position of your crosshair (string value).
$location – Your current position (string value).
$weapon – Your current weapon (string value)
$clips – The number of clips remaning (numeric value).
$bullets – The number of bullets remaning in the clip (numeric value).

The other binds

Here are my other radio binds.
˜: Enemy Heard
1: Affermative (Used to respond to orders)
2: Negative (Used to respond to orders)
3: Enemy Spotted
4: I’m on it! (Used to respond to requests for support or medic)
5: I need a medic
6: Nice One
7: Good Job Team
8: What the f**k, over? (Used when I don’t find the last opponent or when one of my teamates shoots at me)
9: Thanks (When someone heals me or supports me in a difficoult situation)
B: Area Secured (When I previously called an Enemy Spotted and I succesfully kill the enemy)
N: Sorry about that.
K: Double Time, Let’s Move! (After healing)

  1. 6 Tips to get the most out of your radio The team radio in Urban Terror is fundamental to coordinate between teamates and is crucial to achieve a victory in possibly every game mode. We already discussed it and we talked about usefull radio binds but today we are going to take it a little bit forward. Here are a few tips to improve your binds to make sure you get the maximum effectiveness possible....
  2. Key mapping Basics There are a couple of things that you should do as soon as possible. One is to bind some radio messages, and we'll talk about this in another post. The other is to map your keys effectively. I found the basic configuration a bit frustrating and very uncomfortable, also it doesn't look like any other configuration from the modern FPS. Luckyly you can change it. The following is my key map. I found it to be very good. It can be a good starting point to you to improve it further and further....

The binds I find Myself using most (all custom radios with improved status like health and location)…

    “I need a medic”
    “no problem”
    “thanks”
    “cover me”

The ones like enemy heard I’ve not had a lot of use for… it’s good to have your teammates show up on map when they have an enemy in sight on TS or bomb… but I have found one of two things.

    1. they usually are too involved in combat to hit a key because they’re busy shooting and dodging.
    2. they’re about to be too involved in combat because once they’ve spotted someone they’re lining up for a shot.

For scrims, we’re all on vent… and constantly updating position and details like who’s down and who’s hurt or locations and damage to enemies. I’ve had people that bound “enemy seen at $crosshair” to their damned attack button. OMG I wanted to slap them lol.

YMMV of course, just My $0.02

It’s a fine line to use the radio. It can be a powerful tool for coordination… especially since it highlights you on the map (which is why you should insist your team wear unique colors if possible, helps to track someone down if you miss the call on the map). But if someone is hunting and using headphones… constant radio updates are a huge distraction. Also… and this is mostly noobs… it’s the same mentality as waiting to cross at a crosswalk.. they think the more they hit it the faster it works. I need a medic! I need a medic! I need a medic! I need a medic! I need a medic! I need a medic! Are we there yet mommy? lol

Fortunatly there are server variables to set anti radio flood.
However, in Pubs or Scrims (without Teamspeak or Ventrillo) radio coordination can be very usefull IMHO, whitout abusing it.
I beg for people to bind “enemy spotted”. It’s very annoying when your team has 3 people left and suddently you find yourself alone with no clue on where is the enemy.

My uber noobness says I have no idea what a bind is or how to do one. Lets indulge my uber noob.

    Plz?

Binding a key means assign a particular command to it. For example, your “W” key is binded to “Forward”.
There are two ways of binding keys. The first one is via the Controls menu, where you can assign a limited number of keys.
The other way is to bind the commands via console or via the autoexec.cfg file.
Try this simple bind. Open up the console and type:

\bind < say I’ve learnt how to kill you on DailyNade.com

Then try to press < and tell me what happens ;)

  3. Sirmimer says:

The most importen binds for me is “Enemy spottet+$crosshair”, “No Enemys+$crosshairs”, “radio msg; i need a medic+$heatlh”

Oh also i think theres a $leader that tells who the leader is in follow the leader.

  4. Engine says:

Yes. I omited it since almost nobody plays Follow the Leader.

  5. Sirmimer says:

I only saw it in the summer cup when i played 1 maps in ftl =).

  6. Jez says:

I’m a bit more bind crazy than that! Also, being mostly a CTF player I don’t even have binds for those 2 you mention as being most important.

Here’s mine (apologies for the long list):

    bind n “ut_radio 9 2 That was awesome :D ” //nice one
    bind g “ut_radio 9 9 Cheers :) ” //Thanks
    bind j “ut_radio 9 1″//good job team
    bind b “ut_radio 9 4 Sorry… that was retarded. :( “//sorry about that
    bind l “ut_radio 9 6 You owe me a beer ;) ”//no problem

    bind i “ut_radio 1 1″//Affirmative
    bind o “ut_radio 1 2″//Negative

    bind h “ut_radio 3 3 I have man flu :( [$health]“//need medic
    bind / “ut_radio 4 7″//anyone Need a medic?
    bind k “ut_radio 1 6″//medic on the way

    bind x “ut_itemdrop flag; say_team Flag dropped @ $location”
bind leftarrow “say_team Flag exiting/Incoming from LEFT”
bind rightarrow “say_team Flag exiting/Incoming from RIGHT”
    bind uparrow “say_team Flag exiting/Incoming from MIDDLE/FRONT”
    bind downarrow “say_team Flag exiting/Incoming from BACK/LOW”

    bind ; “” //headed to bombsite A
    bind ‘ “” //headed to bombsite B
    bind \ “” //I have the bomb @ $location

Also, this one comes in useful :P

bind , “say_team Scratch that, wrong bind :P

Yes, you can clearly tell that I’m not a CTF player. At least not competitive. We play just TS in my clan. We pull out a CTF match every once in a while just for fun.

As a medic, I have “Anyone need a medic?” bound to V. It’s really useful.

  9. Floflo says:

I also have a bind to say the location of my death if there are ennemies nearby:
    bind z “say_team <—– ^6Enemy^7 around here"

    • Engine says:

Yes I’ve binded recently (I wrote that post actually some time ago but posted it just this week) on the comma my death position (<<– I was killed there) as team_say.

  11. Man, I have been trying to figured out how to bind for a while. Thanks.
