How to use your DE like a pro – Tips Roundup

We’re back from the holidays and we’re ready to get back on the servers to frag some people. Today we are starting a new series of articles called “Tips Roundup” which will try to give you tips about a certain topic from all the Daily ‘Nade editors. We chose as our first topic our favourite sidearm: the DE. Let’s take a look at our opinions, our tips on how to use it and more.

Engine

I don’t use a secondary with the SR-8 so I’m a big DE user. My
suggestion is: save bullets. The DE makes a lot of damage so don’t
worry about taking a second more to aim rather than just spray and
pray. I try to take my time and aim even at short distances and I
shoot a bullet every 0.5/1 second. It deals so much damage that it
allows you to compensate the time you waste with damage. Shoot only if
you are sure to hit the target and don’t waste bullets. Keep it always
fully loaded: 6/7 bullets? Time to reload.

PreviousN

This is just my impression, but I think that a lot of players like the
sound the DE makes when it is unloaded very quickly. Seriously, I
think they do. I remember when I first started playing UrT and one of
my friends was bragging to me about how quick he could empty the clip.
I thought to myself, “yeah, but how many of those shots hit?” I guess
it didn’t bother him that he was limiting his skill by shooting too
fast. Even though the sound the DE makes when shooting in rapid
succession is extremely satisfying, shooting the gun very quickly
leads to inaccurate shots with greater spread.

What this essentially means is that the farther your foe is, the less
likely you are to hit him the faster you unload your clip. Therefore,
DE is not a good weapon to switch to if your enemy is very far away at
all. If your enemy is far, and you’re out of ammo, your best bet is to
retreat.

Up close, unload as fast as you want, since the DE is so powerful that
you only needed 1 or 2 shots to land to defeat your foe. But farther
away, the key is to take your shots very slowly.

Tarquin

The only thing you need to make sure of when using the DE is that it hits
when you shoot. That means aiming, and making sure the spread isn’t too big
when you unload successive shots. It’s still possible to shoot it fairly
fast and accurately, but just make sure the crosshair is on the enemy (as
with any weapon). If you do this, you most likely won’t run out of ammo
before the enemy dies because the DE is so goddamn strong.

Durandal

One of thew few cases where I take advantage of this is that people DO
recognize the sound of the DE… so if I’m retreating down a hallway and
being chased by a couple enemies… I will unload a fairly random barrage of
DE rounds at them… which will make a lot of players hesitate long enough
for Me to get to cover. It’s an emergency measure… but it does work.
Also… since you’re only gonna do this in tight quarters… the chances of
a couple of the rounds hitting for half their life total is pretty good.
It did take a lot of work for Me to slow down and aim My shots with the
DE… but that really is the best way most times.

Don

I like that the DE has so much ammo lying around. I don’t mind
reloading it after every kill if I have 4 extra clips, so I don’t mind
spamming a bit with it. Running out of DE ammo is very rare for me.
When sniping I often switch between the SPAS and DE to get a kill. If
my DE doesn’t do the job, I’ll rush with the SPAS and usually get the
kill. That works well in TS because you don’t have to worry so much
about 4 people swarming you. The DE is very strong against unarmored
targets. 2 chest shots and they’re down. It’s faster than the AK for
such a task. Also, if you get 2 vest shots and a limb shot, you have a
kill. Wait for the bleedout, and engage the next target or get a head
start on bandaging/reloading. Your enemy should bleed out quickly as
they have 2% health left.

  1. The DE is also my personal favorite as sidearms go. When I train with the DE, it’s typically on low gravity settings, but also mixing it up with some regular grav (mostly on -LG-DEFeKt’s servers). Shooting at a target flying through the air with the DE takes a lot of patience, and knowing when to wait, or when to take the shot. But more importantly, especially with the low gravity, you really need to take the moment to aim before pulling the trigger. Which is what this article’s getting at. =)

PS: It’s January 6th here. xD Just found that mildly amusing.

  2. Shans[1up] says:

I actually prefer the Beretta, but I do use DE sometimes. That’s quite a good guide.

  3. boogiepanda says:

i prefer the beretta with my usual set up. However, I do tend to use the DE when I’m sniping as it kills way quicker than any other weapon other than the sr8 obviously.

  4. pixx3L says:

Nice guide, but I still have a question…
I also like to use the DE in combination with SR8, but sadly my DE skills are to low to forego to a secondary like MP/UMP. Gonna try your tips soon :D

But: Whats about the laser? Do you think its usefull to equipd it? or doesn’t it make such a great difference?

    • Engine says:

When I snipe I use SR8, DE, Nades, Kev and Helmet.
I use this loadout because I’m pretty good with nades and I can easily pull out 1 kill per round with Nades.
Even though, depending on the other clan strategies I might replace the Nades with a UMP or MP5 (depending on Kevlar use by the opponent).

Laser is actually unusefull if you’re a spray and pray player. But otherwise if you can control your shots, it can become really usefull. When I rush I use M4, Kev, Helm, DE and Nades or I replace nades with laser (depending on the map and the other team behaviours).

    • Anonymous Coward says:

The laser on a DE will make a difference when you fight at medium/long range… but you got an SR8 for that, so skip.

  5. |PS|denied says:

    Haha, I love this website.

This site gives me all the articles I need to read to get better, and this is no exception. The Desert Eagle is in my opinion, the hardest weapon to master, but then again, it’s amazing how pros just slide past the enemy, fire 3 shots and they all hit. This article is very useful to me; helps me improve my DE skills, thanks!

    • boogiepanda says:

Exactly. I hate it when it happens to me, especially as powersliding is silent and they pull off 3 shots so fast I can’t even respond.

      • |PS|denied says:

That’s just bad luck on your part. That never happened to me before; I only watched pro players do that on Youtube.

  6. HandSolo says:

I’m slowly getting my DE skills. One thing that really helped me was to rush with it and then only switch to my primary when I was empty and in a dance. The advantage is that the opponent is probably on his primary first and will have to switch to a secondary or sidearm when you’ve still got a full or at least a healthy clip of primary or secondary. Ideally, you’ve dealt some serious damage with the DE and it only takes a few rounds of primary or secondary to finish the job. I also like to drop my primary and just go DE on TDM servers.

I’ve also tried to train myself to fire off in 2 shot bursts, wait, then fire 2 more. I also keep count and have a rhythm down of firing off 2-2 shot bursts and then a final 3 shot burst and then retreat or find cover.

    • Good technique. If your first 2 shots both hit in the torso, you’ve got yourself a kill (if he’s not wearing kevlar), as the DE will do 57% damage in one shot to the chest. If you hit the arms, that’s 22% (I think). Course, if you want to be extremely picky, double-tap the head. Good luck getting that every time. xD

  7. KEYHOLE says:

DE is one of my favourite weapon, sometime i rush with DE then switch to LR300 to finish him…

  8. Innuendo says:

IMO The DE is the perfect sidearm for any sniper that doesn’t take a secondary. As a sniper the secondary/sidearm is usually pulled out in a pressure situation. i.e being rushed, missed a shot, etc. It’s quick rate of fire and large damage manages to kill people *quickly* the key to getting you out of these pressure situations fastest.

  9. Denied says:

    <3 le DE

  10. don says:

I don’t think you need to be that careful with the DE. Use it at close-medium range, and as long as you’re aimed, spamming the whole clip often gets a kill. 3-4 shot bursts work too. I often spam the DE, and if I fail to complete the kill, run to safety to reload it or my LR (if I’m not sniping; if I am, I usually have a SPAS so I get that out), then finish the target off. I’m a bit of a crap shot (used to pub aiming) now that I haven’t played a match in a good 9 months, but I probably have a bunch of examples of this on demo. I think it’s been an effective method for me, providing the initial shot was aimed true.

    • Innuendo says:

I totally agree with this, close to medium range often requires a bit of spam, to get off enough shots in as little time as possible. I find more often than not you will get a devestating helmet or headshot.

The only time that single shot aiming of a DE is advisable is over long distances, like the austria tunnel. But aiming a DE over this distance is rather silly anyway especially if you are carrying an assault or sniper rifle.

    Huh?

  12. Okay first off: You said your suggestion was to save bullets! Later on you said 6/7 bullets? Time to reload. Bullshit! Don’t reload when you have 6 bullets left out of 7. That’s a shit-load of wasted bullets. Use you 6 and if you run out use knife. I think that paragraph of the article is bullshit.

    • cynicism says:

      “save bullets” = don’t spam
“Keep it always fully loaded” because sometimes, you have no idea how important that one bullet could be.

This article is opinions and suggestions from UrT players from all over the world. There is no right or wrong, everyone has their preferred ways of using the DE. Just because it’s not your way of using the DE, doesn’t mean it’s “bullshit”.
Engine doesn’t carry a secondary when he is sniping, which is important to have a fully loaded sidearm.
Reloading 6/7 is not necessary a waste of bullets. You have 3 clips and there are always more ammo for you to pick up on the ground.
If you prefer the knife more than a couple extra bullets of DE. Next time in a match, when you run out of ammo of your DE because it’s not fully loaded, pull out the knife, and let me know how consistent you are with it.

      • okay I will. And i’ll pwn you. 6/7 is a waste of bullets and you know it. What if you are in Team Survivor. Pistols only? What then most people either use beretta or just use all their DE ammo. BTW you only have 4 clips if you use extra ammo.

        • don says:

          <dailynade writer mode off>
          <asshat mode on>

First off, you won’t pwn anybody because you aren’t in a clan that plays matches. Gotta get the basics down first.:)

Second, nobody plays pistols only. Except newbies. This article was obviously written with normal gameplay in mind. The DE is not a primary – it’s your backup gun which should always be ready to go. I always take the time to reload my DE after a firefight.

Reloading at 6 is maybe a bit of a waste, I’ll concede that, but 5/7 is definitely reload territory. I reload 80% of the time at 5 bullets, and probably 50% of the time at 6. Especially in TS you need your DE fully loaded. Half way into a TS round, there is no such thing as a safe spot. You don’t want to be sitting there after a firefight reloading your LR, and not have 7 bullets in your DE when you hear the enemy right on the other side of a door. MANY times I have killed someone with the last bullet in my DE. If that means going 7×0, so be it. Ammo is all over the place, especially DE ammo. I very frequently have 3 or 4 magazines remaining in a TS round. I practically never run out of DE ammo, and I often use it for suppressing fire when retreating.

You’re fucked if you have to knife after a firefight starts. Unless you’re about 5 feet away, you have practically no chance of getting in range to knife a decent player. That’s before getting legged. You have to pretty much get lucky and have your opponent run out of ammo before killing you.

There’s no point dying with 4 magazines left for all your guns.

          • Okay Don. Listen. You do realize that in my clan we have had many matches and we destroy them. We play Pistols n’ spas and autos. Those aren’t newbie things. If you think they are then YOU TRY IT. Let’s see who wins. I am also great in autos so you can just shut that little trap of yours. Don’t act so wise. And Engine (No disrespect to you) but I know a ton of people that play Pistols. Not just pistols but they pistols as a fun Team Survivor mode on the side of autos. Of course I play autos. I’m just saying if you’re good at aiming (like I am) then you shouldn’t need so many bullets in you magazine. The second half of your article I enjoyed because it does make a lot of sense and I thank you for that part. I’m sorry that I said that it is a waste of ammo, I just think it is not needed to reload then. I’m sick of people saying they’d destroy me cause they think that their tactics are better then mine cause you don’t know this but I’m pretty damn good. My clan is a great clan by the way. We are the best clan at pistols. And a pretty great clan at autos. We have never lost a pistols war and have only tied once. Most of our wars are auto and we lose maybe 1/4. We are pretty damn good. Don’t jump to conclusions and say your better than me.

        • Engine says:

Unfortunately I have some troubles with my internet connection so I couldn’t answer earlier. Fortunately both don, cynism and iCare got the point.
First off: nobody plays pistols only.
Second: the DE is usually a finishing weapon.. which means that every bullet is precious since probably your Primary just ran out of bullets. If you don’t reload with 6/7 bullets you lose approximately 14% chances of hit.
Third: I use the DE instead of a secondary when I snipe so the bullets becomes even more precious.
Fourth: the vast majority of the players (I would say a good 80%) uses the DE among the Beretta so it means that every kill that I get gives me back a fully loaded DE.
Fifth: How many kills do you think you can pull out? Seriously…
If you are so savy about reloading a magazine you probably get 1 kill per magazine.. which means an average of 3 kills per round just with the DE. If you get 3 kills per round just with the DE in high competitive environments.. probably you don’t need any guide but I think that this is not the case.

Oh and by the way.. everyone has is style of play which doesn’t give you the right of saying that this is bullshit. You can disagree but leave bad karma out :\

    • iCare says:

why would you want to enter any potential firefight with less than the maximum number of bullets available to you?

  13. JMB says:

One thing I’d like to air for consideration:

Deagle is great, but beretta can be something else sometimes, especially if you have a mouse and you set both left and right click to shoot and alternate clicking each button. It’s like having half an MP5 as your sidearm.

    • boogiepanda says:

You do htat? I don’t know anyone else who does that!

      • JMB says:

I both have personally done that (my mouse has problems, so not right now) and known people to do that.

        • JMB says:

Sorry for double post, but for example, I wasn’t paying attention in oildepot in the space between rocks and large building and someone came up to me with a DE and helm shot me for 66.

I managed to shoot about 7 beretta shots before he could shoot a second time even without this method. It took about those 7 shots to down him b/c of kevlar and some legshots but it took about 0.6-0.8 seconds. Guy was, of course, surprised. He expected an easy kill, obviously.

  14. -DxT-denied says:

I was surprised that this pistol had less than half the ammo the other one had when I just started, but now it’s ok.

    • iCare says:

slightly less than half as many bullets, slightly less than twice as much damage. it all works out! ;)

      • boogiepanda says:

But some of that extra damage goes to waste!

        retta = 5×20 (kevlar) = 100% dmg
        DE = 3 x 38 = 114% dmg -> 14% waste :O
        Retta 3 x 34 = 102% (helmet)
        DE = 2 x 66 = 132 % 32% waste :O

But I prefer DE with laser, retta with silencer. Seeing as I never use both laser and silencer at the same time, I don’t have to choose :) )

        • iCare says:

well yeah, if everyone you ever shoot with a DE has 100% health i guess ;)

the extra damage is definitely good for finishing or pressure situations.

        • Mr.Goldfish says:

The 14 percentage wasted is irrelevant. No one cares about how much percent was wasted, they care about how many bullets were saved. Maybe if it took the same amount of bullets to kill with the Deagle as it did the Beretta as long as one of the pistols has a bigger clip. Then it would matter. Although the only shot where to both guns use the exact same amount of bullets is a shot to the head.

  15. Delerius says:

If beretta still did 50% damage to helmets I’m sure alot of people if not most,,, would rock it ;P. But I guess since they decided to make the helmets out of adamantium you can’t argue with the stopping power of the DE. And nothing is more ownage then a 1-2 shot facial with the eagle.

  16. Lebbra says:

I use DE just from short to extremely close distance, so I prefer to use all the bullets in a fraction of second. Of course you must aim and not spray around (DE is not a MP5K), but at a short distance it is relatively easy to do.
A seven DE bullet barrage is also the only way to save your skin when you bump on someone with a knife.

  17. Mr.Goldfish says:

Method of Shooting a Desert Eagle from Most Accurate to Least Accurate:

    1. Tapping – Fire a single shot and wait for the cross hair to reset.
    2. Double tapping – Fire a single shot, move the cross hair down to counter the recoil and fire another shot. (Make sure to fire both shots in a row as fast as possible.)
    3. Controlled Firing – Fire a single shot, move the cross hair down to counter the recoil, fire another shot, move the cross hair down, fire, cross hair, fire, cross hair, fire, cross hair, fire, cross hair and fire. (Make sure to fire all seven shots in a row as fast as possible.
    4. Spamming – Firing rapidly with caring about spread or recoil. (This is not really a method of shooting the Deagle.)
