How to use the Negev like a pro

I love the Negev. Why? Because it’s just so much fun to use. It has the reputation of being a noob weapon for several reason. Mainly because new players are amazed by this shiny, noisy, Rambo-like weapon. But when it comes to facts the Negev it’s not that shiny. You can’t carry a Secondary Weapon with it, it deals less damage than throwing rocks at your opponent and so on.
However it has some really cool specs that makes the Negev an intresting weapon. Let’s find out some of them.

Pros

  • Amazing fire rate – It can shoot aproximately 7.36 rounds per second. The Lr-300 shoots aproximately 6.91 rounds per second and the AK aproximately 4.7 Rounds per second.
  • Big magazine – 90 rounds magazine that empties in aproximately 12 seconds.
  • Awesome precision – Huge precision with a little spread (that however increases while shooting).

Cons

  • Low damage – It’s the weapon that deals the less damage in the game. It has the same damage stats as the Beretta.
  • Slow reload – It takes 7.5 seconds to reload the Negev.

Altrough these might seem acceptable, the damage dealt by the Negev is insanely low and makes the weapon almost unplayable.
However with some tricks you will find yourself pulling out some decent results from this weapon.

Which equipment should I use?

Being such a weak weapon (in terms of damage) makes you a vulnerable target. I suggest to take Negev,DE,Kevlar,Helmet,Silencer.
If needed you can replace the helmet with the MediKit. Full protection will get yourself covered from shots coming at you and the silencer will help you keeping a low profile as long as lowering the spread a bit.

How do I play the Negev?

The Negev pretty much plays like a G36 without a scope. You must stay in areas free from enemies and full of cover. It’s high precision allows you to pull out some good shots at good distance. Not having a scope will make aiming harder so I suggest you lowering the FOV to 90 or 95. Also to see the enemy better I suggest you to set a smaller crosshair (I use 10 with the Negev).
Don’t rush with the Negev. You will get killed faster than you can press the \kill key. Try to flank the enemies but try to keep a good distance from them. The silencer will help you to stay relatively unnoticed and silent. Don’t be afraid of running away and wait for them in more safer spots, you have to be a Ninja. Watch for the bullet counter. As long as it remains over 15-20 it’s ok, you don’t have to reload.
Aim high. Try to get always shots at the torso or at the head. Notice though that a helmet shot from a Negev does only 34 damage and a torso shot does 30.
The Negev it’s also one of the few weapons in the game that doesn’t kill you with a clear headshot. A shot to the head with no helmet just deals 50 damage.

Against Sr-8

Against snipers the Negev can become deadly if you are good enough to get closer to them. If you manage to advance unnoticed or if you manage to flank them, the Negev can easily own an enemy sniper by simply rushing on them. Also the Negev is the ideal weapon for prefire and unzooming them.

Against Automatics

If you play it right you shouldn’t face close combats against autos. However, if it happens try to move as much as possible from left to right. The best thing would be running away, so if you are close to a door or a breach just retreat while shooting. You can then flank the enemy or just wait for them by faking bandage and stuff like that. If you get rushed and need a quick kill try with the de.

Why should I use the Negev?

The Negev is a good supporting weapon. It’s an intresting weapon for second-liners which can hurt enemies to help the rushers do a quicker job. Also it’s very intresting in the hands of a medic since it can support the team from far away.
The main reason you should use the Negev it’s his awesome precision.
If a good amount of foes don’t wear the Kevlar then the Negev might become an intresting choice. Also if the enemy group tends to be too tight and the enemies are very close to each other, the Negev can do a lot of damage to multiple opponents.
If the enemy team is full of snipers and the map does allow that you can be their nightmare by flanking and rushing on them.

Overall

If you like to be a supporter rather than a rusher, if you like to be a medic or if you care more about your team rather than your score perhaps you should give the Negev a try. Occasionally it might be an intresting and unexpected choice and it could work for some rounds. Also it might help you to break the monotony and just try something new. Leave feedbacks in the comments about your experience with the Negev and tell us your best score with it.

I’ll have to respectfully disagree about what you said about the Negev’s “awesome precision.” The Negev is in fact a fairly inaccurate weapon. The only reason it seems accurate is because it’s spread does not increase as rapidly as the other weapons in the game, such as the LR300 or the M4.

    • Engine says:

It’s true. But you can make a burst of about 10 bullets without loosing that much precision.

      • lt.daN says:

Yes you can have a burst of 10 bullets without losing much precision. The issue is that you DON’T start out with good precision to begin with.

        • BlankIt says:

Actually, the negev is quite accurate. I think it may even be more accurate than an lr with laser and silencer, however there is alot of spread after 10 -15 shots.

  2. Lebbra says:

    my two cents:
Negev is a very good choice in crowded maps when no LR300 or M4 pro’s are playing into. In such a case you can get very good scores, because you’ll riddle with bullets the most of your opponents before they could aim and shot you. Furthermore it is also possible to face toward two opponents at the same time because there are no need to reload.
The same happens if you found a sniper at low/medium distance.

In a more skilled context, you rarely will use a negev but, as Engine said it could be a good choice for a second line player, facing just wonded or lonely opponents.
On long distances negev is just a tactical weapon, to keep an opponent busy or impede him to cross through a corner or a door.

In any case, never try to brave face to face a good player with an auto weapon, or a skilled sniper on a long distance: you’ll die 80-90% of times.

  3. Unclefragger says:

You do know that the Beretta kills one shot on heads? (Not helmets, just heads), whilst the Negev only deals 50%? The Negev pretty much is the MP5 with a very big clip (only considering damage and speed, never measured the spread). Beretta, MP5 and Negev share the same damage levels, just on unprotected heads the Beretta kills instant.

  4. |CN|Masha says:

Negev is pretty good to go with defending Flag :D
Also nice gun with soooo small recoil! XP

  5. Anonymous Coward says:

I would disagree on medic using negevs… the movement penalty makes them less effective. Medics should use the weapon they are the most comfortable with, there is no “best” weapon for a medic.

    • Engine says:

True but you agree that the medic is a supporting role to your other teamates and usually a medic should stay relatively back from the fray.

      • Anonymous Coward says:

Yeah, but staying back doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fight… an extra gun can make all the difference. Medics are usually the most experienced players anyway, most of the time running around without a Kevlar vest, with only a medikit and an helmet and still beating the crap out of fully armored players. They can take care of themselves. :)

  6. SE7EN says:

no mov penality when using the negev, it was removed w/ 4.0 i think

  7. taggedzi says:

I personally love to tote the negev. I think it unfair to use in normal game play unless I feel mean or am getting over run. If you leave off the kevlar and other accessories you can still pull some very nice jumps. I agree with the author to some extent if you want to use the negev against better players it takes some brains and planning, but is very effective when used right. (I love to pick off people bragging how leet they are with a negev… just gives me a lot of satisfaction.)

Negev weak weapon only for support ?! Is this some kind of noobs guide ?!
I am disagree with u , Engine , not totally , I love Negev too , after 1 year UrT playing I don’t think , that I am newbie ,but I am still amazed by this Rambo weapon , for me is still so shiny as the first time ,when I play with it .
I was playing with Negev successfully as a rusher , when u face much skillful than u opponent ,especially if u are alone , the weapon means nothing , u are dead meat whatever the weapon ,it is matter of skill not weapon ! It is not true , that Negev is so weak vs snipers , at long distance (100-200 meters) is not such exception to kill sniper , even if the sniper is staring at u .
The most negative part of the Negev performance is the heavy weight .
For camping noobs it is not problem , but ….
To say don’t rush with Negev is so silly .
    Weak vs automatics ?!
    How u decide that ?
But the biggest mistake is in the title -> ”How to use Negev like a pro ”
1 noob will never play like a pro , just simple unchangeable fact !

    • Engine says:

I respectfully disagree. Your comment is wrong in many ways. First: the random punctuation. I had to go through it several times before figuring out what you said. With that said let’s start.
A rusher will have a hard time using the Negev. A rusher should kill his opponent in a matter of a second and the Negev deals less damage than the Beretta. If you are facing a much skilled opponent the weapon is a very important factor. Would you prefere to rush a skilled opponent with an LR-300 or a Beretta? I can easily kill Tarquin if I get him off guard with an Lr-300 but I will have an hard time to do so with the Beretta since I might give him time to react and eventually kill me.
Never said that the Negev is weak against sniper. I even said that could become a great weapon to unzoom them. The weight is not big issue. I researched a lot before doing this article and I also tried some jump maps with the Negev and it doesn’t change anything. I still say don’t rush with the Negev unless you want to get killed. The Negev is extremely weak against autos. Make this test. Take a friend. Both equip Kevlar. Then stare face to face and start shooting, you with the Negev and your opponent with an M4. Tell me who dies first.
What’s wrong about the title? A noob will never play like a pro? Everybody was a noob when he started so what’s your point?

      • Txc says:

I have moments , when I play good with some weapon , the next moment I play like a noob with the same weapon , so I must change the weapon (sometimes 1 moment durate 1min, 1 hour ,day or week). In the right, long enough moment , my friend with M4 will die first . It is more about moment condition for me.
Newbie is not equal to noob , the newbie just play like noob in the beggining , no enough game experience , if the player continues to play bad after enough playtime & is experienced , then that player is noob . Everyone was newbie , but not everyone is noob , usually difficult to make difference .

        • SiL3nCe says:

No I don’t think you start as a newbie, but as a noob. The words newbie/noob ar almost always the same. Not enough experience. Because everybody gets better when he plays more. Just some people need more training than others.

So the title is not a problem…

And than about the rush, I think Engine said it good. As rusher you need to kill them fast. With Negev you must hit them more times than with a LR300. And the Negev shoot fast, but not so fast that you can kill so fast as LR300. I mean when you have 2 pro’s. Than the 1 with LR300 will win.

And when you play succesfully with Negev as rusher, you had weak enemies.

  9. david says:

I want to point out an error. At the beginning you stated that the LR-300 was faster than the AK, but its the opposite way round….

    • Daniel says:

WRONG, WRONG. The LR- 300 is faster than the slow AK. Try using an LR and count how long the 30 bullet magazine expends. Then tap the \kill key and switch to the AK. Try the AK. You’ll see which is faster.

  10. Jongo says:

The silencer does not reduce spread. (If you find that you hit better while using the silencer with a weapon, it’s just in your head.) Only the laser reduces spread.

    • SiL3nCe says:

Read the discription of the silencer in the game. It reduce the spread a little bit.

You can see it when you click on the silencer ;)

  11. Arch says:

I play negev from time to time. I read some comments and I agree that negev is the best choise against total noobs. I have made my best scores in FFA with negev. Also full protection and silencer is must as your opponents kill you faster if they catch you.
The most important thing which makes negev viable is how well protected with kevlar your opponents are. Against turtles I wouldn’t recommend using it.

  14. Jacob says:

The author is right on about the Negev, DE, Kevlar, Helmet,Silencer combo. Very effective. At some point I tried to use grenades instead of silencer, but they were pretty useless. If you’re playing a game where you can play effectively with Negev, grenades _have_ to be useless most of the time (because of distance). A nice side effect of the silencer is that it makes your gun relatively quiet. By the time the opponent locates your position, he’s almost dead from your attacks

Every once in a while I play CTF with Negev and get decent results. It depends on the map, the opponents, and your mission. I like using Negev when I play CTF on Algiers 6vs6 or so in either defence or attack mode. Algiers is one of those maps where there is plenty of distance, and plenty of places to hide (corners, windows, boxes, etc). Normally I’d play it with M4 or G36, but when it gets somewhat crowded, fighting gets really hectic, very little time to aim, running out of ammo is a real problem there. Negev is very good in those situations. With Negev, I can find a good safe location somewhere midway between flags and then spam and spam with it without worrying about the ammo. In this mode, I often manage to shot down between 2-4 opponents before they get me because most of the time they’re chasing the guy with the flag and not me.

  15. Dec says:

I thought of an interesting tactic while playing turnpike once. Use a negev and smoke the direct path from red spawn to the blue flag(it’ll probably get smoked up anyways) then hide behind the smoke and spray for your life.
It works really well, you can get like five or so kills in one life, and it is extremely annoying to the red team, until they get some tacs :(

  16. Warpig says:

Nothing can beat the Negev for boosting your ego.
Sick of bad hits? Rush in with a Kevlar, Helm and anything else, and spray like you never have sprayed before.

On crap servers, this tactic works really well. SPAM.
On good servers, use a Lr/M4/AK.
Bear in mind that you can pickup sidearms….
