How to use the G36 like a pro

The G36 is commonly considered a weapon for noobs. Wrong. It’s instead a choice that can give many satisfactions to players of any kind of level and can become a real nightmare for your opponents. Let’s see his main features.

Pros:

  • Automatic shoot from near to far distances (via zoom)
  • High precision
  • Zoom penalty movement lower than the Sr-8

Cons:

  • High spread even after a few rounds shot
  • Occasional unhits (sometimes bursts to the chest are not recognized as hits, and this happens more often tha with autos)
  • Lower Fire Rate than M4 or LR300

Be careful though. Some maps are not meant to be played with a G36. Maps for rushers like Turnpike or Dressing Room should be played with pure automatics like M4 or Lr300. Big maps like Riyadh or Laneway are the ideal places for Sr-8 and PSG-1. However in the majority of the other maps this weapon might be a good choice.

I personally get better results on Casa, but also in Algeris and Uptown, where there are both close up combat and wide areas and corridors.

How to use the G36?

Let’s start with the choice of the equipment. Since it is an automatic, even if it’s not that fast, you souldn’t choose a secondary weapon (you can always pick up one from a dead opponent or from a dead teamate).
De or Beretta? DE for shure because it will help you in point-blank fights since you don’t have a secondary weapon.
Kevlar AND Helmet? I would say yes, since the G36 is not a weapon to rush with. You have one slot left to choose between Nades, Silencer or Medikit. This depends a lot on your personal taste and also on the situation (maybe in a CW you are forced to choose the Medikit). I personally go with the Nades.

Here we go.

As said before, you don’t rush with G36. The best technique is to move quickly by staying in areas of the map relatively clear, using every cover possible (crates, walls), shooting the enemy from far away.
Avoid long bursts. Especially while zooming bursts should be between 3 and 5 rounds maximum. If your opponent hasn’t seen you yet you can fire single shots and finish him with a final burst. This can be a very good technique.
If your opponent is very close though just shoot longer bursts, without exagerating. If you are caught by an opponent with your zoom on, you will unzoom by instinct but often it is not the ideal choice. By practicing you will learn to not unzoom and just shooting while moving backwards, gaining time and maintaining the enemy always in your field of view.

When should I zoom?

I would say that you should start zooming when targets are at least 50 feets away from you (15 meters). To give you an idea, is the distance between the spawn and the Laundromat roof in Uptown.

How do I use the zoom in close combat?

As usual, start shooting while doing short strafes from left to right. If your opponent is far away and has an auto, stop to avoid the penalty movement and take advantage of your superior precision. If you are facing a sniper never stop before unzooming him, stop to finish him only after the first hit.

Overall

Overall the G36 is a weapon for those who think before shooting and not vice-versa.
Also remember that the silencer can lower the spread, suppresses the fire and the noise and makes you less recognizable. If this is your way of playing, this is the ideal weapon. Instead if your primary objective is to get first to the enemy respawn, leave this weapon where it is.

Good job mate! I might start using the G36 with your advices!

Very good article. I get tired of G36 bashing. If I’m defending on a larger map…it is the perfect tool for intercepting people rushing and taking pop shots at mid-field snipers.

Unzooming snipers is a great time that everyone should take advantage of.

I don’t want to use the G36 after this article…
I don’t have the time to think before shooting, sadly :D

God sakes I hate the G36. It’s not a real Sniper and no real Auto, which actually means you can’t use Sr8, PSG1 neither LR300, Ak103, M4 good. Sorry :D

Yeah just have try it :)

The G36 is very much a love or hate weapon. Personally I Like – Love it. If I had my way I would recommend a new skin for the G36 as it looks a bit shabby.

The most important thing about it is which map you’re playing on. There are a few terrible maps despite being large like Uptown and Casa simply because they have lots of corners and people rush a lot on them. Maps like Algiers and even Abbey are a lot better choices for this gun.

I used to use only G36, but I have since learned that it’s disadvantaging to always use the gun and I should pick which map to use it on. So now, overall I play better when I use my M4 on maps like Casa and Turnpike and I still do well when I use my G36 on Algiers.

“The best technique is to move quickly by staying in areas of the map relatively clear, using every cover possible (crates, walls), shooting the enemy from far away.”

Regarding this, it sounds contradictory. You’re telling people to stay in the areas that are clear, and that implies the open areas. However you then tell them to use every cover possible. So for example, are you saying that in Algiers, you’d tell people to stay in the open, but say hide behind wheelbarrow or the fat tree outside of palmtree corner?

Maybe it is a misunderstanding because of my english.
I suggest to stay away from enemies (not in open and exposed areas), avoiding close combats and try to hit them from away, hiding the most of your body behind boxes or walls.
It’s obviously easier to hit a whole body at 30m by a zoomed G36 than to hit just a head poking out behind a wall at the same distance with a LR300. :-)

  13. Hey Voleur….n1 article

    You’re welcome ;)

  14. Flamey says:

I guess some people like me can get “open” confused with “clear”. Perhaps “clear from danger (or enemies)” and it would avoid all confusion. Thanks for clearing that up though.

great job. i think you worked out the major points. g36 is definitely not for everyone, i -for example- prefer either lr300/m4 or sr8. but the mix of the g36 being on the one side an automatic, but having on the other side a zoom function, can be an advantage in some situations.

  16. Jacon says:

Lately I have been getting good results playing CTF with G36 even in small maps like Abbey CTF or Turnpike. This strategy works if you’re primarily defending the flag or act in supporting role for players who try to steal the enemy flag. In both cases, you already know where to expect enemies and their tactics and you can position yourself to ambush them from a long distance. If you’re attacking the enemy base, you don’t have to go all the way to the flag area. Just position yourself at a distance and keep harassing the defenders with your G36, while helping out the people who go for the enemy flag. Even when enemies see you, it’s just too hard to get hit by an AK or M4 in the head or torso from halfway the map, but most of your G36 shots will land right on target and have a devastating effect. A well aimed burst or two from G36 is enough to kill people from great distance. Getting headshots with G36 from distance is surprisingly easy. I have been accused for being a hacker once for achieving many one shot kills with G36 against opponents with no helmet.

I can understand now why G36 is considered a n00b weapon. A n00b with no technical skills can still get good scores with G36 as long as he chooses a good tactic. Choosing a good tactic is a thinking skill not a technical skill (like wall jumping, power-sliding, and aiming an AK well).

The key of all G36 tactics is to keep your distance from the enemy which is the mode in which this gun works best and your opponents are at a disadvantage. But if they can get close, an M4 or AK in good hands has an advantage over G36.
