Could Urban Terror become the next Counter Strike?
The next Urban Terror update is gonna be really important. In my opinion is gonna equal the importance that the 3.0 and the 4.0 had in the past.
The 3.0 and the 4.0 created the game, but the next relase is going to perfect it. Urban Terror 4.2 is really going to tell if Urban Terror is going to have success or is doomed to be just one of the many.
In my opinion Urban Terror could become the next Counter Strike, and could even also replace it through time.
Counter Strike is suffering from the players splitting among different versions (mostly 1.6 and CS:Source) and also from the increasing popularity of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Counter Strike is pretty similar to CoD due to its somehow realistic nature and Modern Warfare has more exposure among sponsors, media and so on. Counter Strike is getting old, and is lacking innovation. It plays in the same way since its first relase.
Think about how the wall jump and the powerslide have changed the way you play the game. The current Urban Terror gameplay is perhaps one of the most funny and flexible in this industry. You can rush with your Lr-300 while doing walljumps that will make Neo from Matrix blush or you can sneak up on enemies like a silent assassin.
But it still has that “retro” feel that needs to go away. 4.2 will bring in stuff like Bump Maps and refractions that will give a huge boost to the game visuals. Not to mentions the new animations made by Frankie V which we interviewed just a couple of days ago. It still needs to get more personality but the way seems right.
Frozen Sand is doing a great job and the game keeps remaining freeware. Counter Strike: Source is 15-20 bucks on Steam.
Also, Urban Terror is cross platform between Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. For every Mac user or Linux user looking for a good FPS is an obligated choice.
The time seems right. If Frozen Sand plays well his cards Urban Terror could see a great improvement over the next few years and if they want it might become more than just another free first person shooter.

- Funny things to try: The Counter-Strike Training Method Have you ever played Counter-Strike? I did a couple of times. Is quite funny but I can't live with walljumps. In Counter Strike you can't choose weapons from the start of the round. You start with the standard pistol and then you earn money during the round to buy equipment and weapons for the next round. So the first round is very particular since is basically pistol only. Also when you do certain actions like TeamKilling you loose money and it happens that you can't afford any weapon and stick with the standard pistol. I found this method to be funny when applied to Urban Terror and I use it as a training method once in a while when playing on public servers. Let's see how it works!...

For me, Urban Terror was and still is the best FPS , particularly for CTF.
and it is the natural Counter Strike for linux users.
when does the new update come out. I have heard rumors of the update but didnt believe it was true and wanted a reassurance that it was real.
Probably Q1 2010
+1! works great under Linux (both 32 and 64 bits!) , is free, is on the road of innovation..Keep up the good work Frozen Sand!
Counter Strike works on Linux with Wine, without difficulties.
In no way UrT seems to CS, it is a full-flegded game.
I’m not saying they are similar. I’ve said that it has the potential to replace it. Much like Call of Duty did for Day of Defeat (but in a smaller scale).
I’m sorry i was answering to toshav about he said not about what you have written.
If we can see UrT in WCG or ESL Pro series, UrT is done. Cs garbage. We need a lot of leagues. So, fell the response guys. UrT’s future depends on us. League, league… What Fatal1ty said? Practice, practice, practice…
Well I try all FPS games and still I stick with UrT. I love being able to zoom around to flank, and jump huge distances, it seemed like a stupid idea before I had played it but now that I’m used to it, whenever I play other games they seem slow. I would love to see UrT gain popularity and be picked up by WCG to replace CS
It shares some common ground with CS… but it doesn’t replace CS. They are their own game.
UrT has some things that are pretty much unique (the sliding, climbing and bouncing that were mentioned).
People still play CS… people still play UrT… hell some people still play Doom 1. Pick your poison. UrT is a testament to a quality product and labor of love for it’s developers and fans.
I think the thing that makes UrT the most unique is the community. There are lots of people that like cs.. or call of duty… or halo.. or whatever… but there is a real sense of community in UrT. It sounds corny, but it’s true. Maybe it’s because it’s free… or not the latest greatest and we only draw in people that want to play not the people that want the latest graphics fest.
I don’t think UrT is replacing anything… or going anywhere.
I hope more people will play URT.
Lol, I don’t hope that. More and more fools and hack3rs will join us
Yay urt!
Just you wait until there is Urban Terror MLG tournaments in exotic locations around the world with lots of prize money!!!!!
No. The Answer is no.
This title is so wrong in so many ways. But the short answer on the question stated: No way!
yeah i agree with u lol
The title is meant to be a bit controversial.
Urt change my life.
Never a video game make me addict at this point !!!!!!
I call it Crack Terror

I think that UrT is great and the “retro” aspect of it is what makes it as good as it is. I don’t personally feel that it is retro, I think it is possibly the best online multiplayer shooter ever made.
The retro feel probably comes from the less that CoD graphics, but that is also what makes it run so smoothly on the average computer. You don’t need a massive gaming machine to play it, which I think is a main part of it’s popularity. I love it, hope it stays free, and that they don’t turn it into a modern warfare or counter strike. Urban Terror is its own genre of game. It does not and should not need to “become” a next anything, it simply IS!
Imho, if Urban Terror remains played besides its average graphics, it’s mostly because of the high skill ceiling.
In CS, once you know how to aim well, you are the best.
In UrT, even if you can kill 3 people in a row with a signe round of DE, you will still get killed from that nade you didn’t see, that sniper far away… Or that knife in the hands of the jumper behind you.
I’m sure that even the most experienced players still get better with the time.
Is that mean URT=Luck game?
well i felt Urt with luck a lot more than ur skills…
I don’t think Urt will replace CS. It’s because Urt and CS is too different. CS is kind a like much more tactical game. Using flash bang, smoke effectively n guns r hard to control its bcuz of recoils… However for Urt we got fast n furious XP with almost no recoil lol Love Urt but it wont replace CS. CS is too popular grown up with game players the game balance is god in CS. Urt is just random
I have a good feeling about UT becoming popular. Last night at 22 CET all 10 of my fav servers where FULL, when they should be empty or with 4 random noobs.
Ok, that was kind of random, but thats how these things start!
I’ve played Urban Terror for around 3 or 4 hours, so I can’t really criticize it properly. In my opinion, so far, it is a great gaming, indeed quite different compared to counter strike 1.6, majority of friendly people. I hope things like Back Track Linux or Urban Terror, or even Ubuntu be innovative.
