Are you making these 5 common mistakes?
In my experience with Urban Terror I’ve come across several players from newcomers to uber pros. Even great players make mistakes that are pretty common. There are many reasons for this. Sometimes great players are just people with good aim but with poor tactics or also it happens that in the middle of the battle people stops thinking consciously and starts playing out of instinct.
Check this list to see if you are making this 5 common mistakes. Remember: admitting that there’s a problem is the first step for solving it.
1 – Wasting Stamina
I could write an entire post on it (and I probably will). People just waste too much stamina resulting in characters that can be heard from a mile away and that don’t have enough stamina to run away in sticky situations. Main reasons are:
- You have always the sprint button pressed.
- You don’t walk and/or crouch when you should.
- Unnecessary jumps (most common error)
- You don’t know how to circle jump correctly.
A great way to save stamina is mixing powerslides with walking. I’ve never heard my character breath again since I started to use this technique which to me is very important. There should be a post about this very soon.
2 – Lack of patience
Sometimes you should just step back and wait. The most common error is in a 1v1 situation when your opponent runs away to reload or to medic himself and you just try to finish him with your sidearm. It’s a big error when you try to do so while bleeding or with low stamina.
Depending on the number of hits that you’ve taken and also the number of hits that you dealt to your opponent you should decide if it is convenient to finish the fight quickly. I try always to bandage if an opponent runs away and also with the help of a good pair of headphones I can hear what he’s doing (bandaging or running away).
3 – Challenging the sniper
This is a very common mistake among good players.. the reason is they got pissed because they got killed by a sniper usually in the opening of the round. Normally a good sniper runs to take position and aim towards doors or cracks where he thinks that enemies will show up. A good example is aiming from the spawn to the plaza (oasis) in Algiers 0r Casa’s Narrow (spawning from New Alley). For a sniper it is a very easy kill since his opponent just doesn’t have the time to spot him and eventually shoot him down. This lends to serious discussions on pubs usually (“You’re a frakkin’ camper!” etc..) and eventually players gets pissed and try over and over to kill the sniper from the same position with poor results. If a players has a natural position advantage you shouldn’t even try. The solution is very simple: flanking. Is very easy to kill the sniper at the spawn in Algiers by flanking him from the left.
4 – Not using the knife
I can’t tell you how important the knife is in sticky situations. You should pull it out whenever an enemy comes too close to you. The reason is that models overlap and you miss him even if you shouldn’t due to bad hits recognition (caused by ping, server, bugs etc..). You should always have your knife ready in slash mode and if you feel that you are going to use it (example if you’re trying to finish your opponent with the DE) try running towards them instead of running away from them.
5 – Reloading
There are two problems about reloading. Reloading too often (reloading with 23/30 is a waste imho) or not reloading at all (for example not reloading the sidearm). It’s a common issue especially when you want to finish off a fight quickly and you forgot to reload. Every bullet is important.
Tell us if you are making other mistakes and if you found yourself in these 5.

- Funny things to try: The Counter-Strike Training Method Have you ever played Counter-Strike? I did a couple of times. Is quite funny but I can't live with walljumps. In Counter Strike you can't choose weapons from the start of the round. You start with the standard pistol and then you earn money during the round to buy equipment and weapons for the next round. So the first round is very particular since is basically pistol only. Also when you do certain actions like TeamKilling you loose money and it happens that you can't afford any weapon and stick with the standard pistol. I found this method to be funny when applied to Urban Terror and I use it as a training method once in a while when playing on public servers. Let's see how it works!...

i rush too more = die frequently
but
i like killing at full speed…. thats why i love this game so….. is it an error?
Nice post
I gotta improve on my rushing i die way too much in a game like 30 to 40 in a ctf game .. any tips??
Don’t rush as much, if you’re dying a lot. Or rush with a buddy, if you can coordinate on TeamSpeak or some such application. Be a bit smarter about rushing. Rush, then rest for a sec in a good hiding spot or other convenient location. Then rush again. That’s pretty much point to point, or bob and weave. It helps a lot, and sometimes, you can get pretty sneaky with it.
Try taking a split second to aim before you fire. usually your opponent will die within 5-10 lr bullets and they cannot react because you surprised them.
Mistakes I have made:
1. Challenging the sniper.
2. Wasting stamina.
3. Not using the knife.
The mistake I make most is “not using the knife”. When my SR8 misses and my enemy rushes me, I take out my DE and fire off 7 shots, but most miss. I reload while my legs are bleeding =/=. Forgot to take out my knife…
I’ve been guilty of all these at one point or another. However, I’ve been training specific skills repeatedly over the last 3 weeks.
The first is sidearm training on pistol-spas only servers. This reinforced on me the importance of 1) aiming, 2) reloading, and 3) using knife in close quarters. A couple good servers for this are Custom Maps: Pistols and Spas (bomb mode) and Voxel.net Pistols and Spas (bomb again).
The second is knife training itself. In addition to above, a lot of times, esp in Dressing Room, my clanmates and I will agree to knives only. This helped to train exactly how far away someone can be before the knife will get them. The knife is deceptive in that it reaches farther than it seems to.
Third, the sniper issue. There are a couple ways I’ve learned to deal with this. 1) Flanking. Almost always a good idea. The best flanks are when you sneak up behind the sniper and knife them in the head. Glorious. 2) Snipe THEM. I’m a fairly quick draw when it comes to the sr-8. if it’s a corner or some such, I’ll move out for a part of a second, and back into cover, just to get the aim right. Then I’ll scope in and move back out, and shoot. 70% of the time they go down. However, this isn’t without its risks. Sometimes you’ll have a flanker. Or sometimes the sniper is just faster than you. So, practice makes perfect. Go find a server with no autos or some such.
Finally, stamina. This is a biggun. Typically, you don’t need to sprint all the way across the map. Take Riyadh for instance. I’ll probably sprint and jump 3 times, which will get me from base to halfway across the map. If angled right, I’ll then go into a slide, and turn, staying in the crouch as I slow down. A lot of the time, if it’s a corner that I’m sliding around, I’ll have either my MP5-K out, or a nade. And it’ll only take a second or three to get that half of stamina back up. I almost never use up all of my stamina at once, which has saved me on more than one occasion.
Writing “this” instead of “these” is also a common mistake (see headline) …
This isn’t relevant to the article, but anyway, someone fixed it apparently.
well my most common mystake is not using the knife, never use it really, im a rusher but im patient too, and i dont get angry enough to try to kill snipers where i have no chance to kill them. sometimes i waste stamina but thats rare =)
About reloading :
I reload very often at 20 or 25 bullets out of 30.
That’s because I mostly play Team Survivor, and I never keep more than 1 magazine for enemy alive (so I often finish round with no clips left, even though I only fired a dozen bullets).
@Zanpa: That’s really a waste of bullets.
Of course it’s not… I would not use those bullets if they stayed in the magazine.
What do you mean?
He means, if he’s dead he cannot fire the ammo he saved by not reloading. If your corpse has any ammo on it, you played sub-optimally.
Basically it’s just being safe rather than sorry. The way I see it you’re only selling yourself short if you run into a firefight with less than a full clip.
Besides, I never completely run out of ammo for my primary in one round since I’ll either pick up more or I’ll have used my sidearm to finish someone off.
rushing is always good if you can keep your crosshair on your enemy while doing it
u ask me challenging the sniper is a good way to improve ur self.. to be honest each time i get snipe i get pissed and grab a sniper and try to snipe him back i know it sounds stupid. Yet think about it in my case i win the sniper battles mostly so why bother thinking weather or not you should challenge the sniper when you know you will be victorious unless the other guy is risky to challenge … ermmm -VA-Wiseman or –VA- Silfer perhaps are the only ones i will rethink about challenging
Lol, is that why you keep callvote map “sr8 only in Clan |tR| West Open TS???
I also do it a lot on pubs. Challenging the sniper helps to improve quick aiming with a sniper gun. Eventually, you will reach a point where you can out-shoot almost every sniper except a few clan members who play way too much.
You serious?
No, you get better by avoiding hard situations DUH.
Dealing with snipers is a fundamental skill imo. Only newb snipers restrict themselves to the sniper-friendly spots like narrow or market. A good sniper will get you from 10 feet away in a wide open space if you aren’t quick enough to take them down.
I don’t agree with #1 or 4. Wasted stamina is stamina which isn’t recharging. If you sit at full stamina, you’re wasting stamina. Ofc you can’t run around 24/7, and you sometimes need to keep above 50% to avoid breathing sounds, but stamina is there to be burned. I’m perpetually out of stamina, yet always seem to be able to find some when I need a burst of speed. This goes hand in hand with #2 – be patient. Sit for 3 seconds to recharge, then rush in.
#4, well, knife is HUGELY dependent on ping. Low ping wins unless one player actually bothers to learn how to effectively knife (waste of time lol). If you have low ping always, then maybe you can actually win against a decent percentage of opponents, but otherwise I think hopping away and trying to reload is better than knifing. Not a personal preference, more of a necessity when you live far from servers.
You should also avoid challenging me in sniper battles.
i agree with Kai …
Not me…
I am drunk when i play Urt:) I should stop swearing so i could hear sounds of the current game;D
Yeah, sound is a big advantage.
Knife is a really good tactic. I am actually quite the pro with a knife, and if I get the chance I’ll always knife someone from behind.
Reloading. I reload on average around 14-15/30ish, but in Team Survivor I might reload a bit earlier, depending on how many opponents are left and such.
Personally with snipers, unless they are really pro, I will just rush/curve towards them really fast and not in a straight line, and most of the time they miss and you have the big, easy advantage.
How can you be pro with a knife, all you do is slash the head and you have a kill in the bag.
You try it, takes skill and practice to calm down and aim for the head/chest like any other weapon. Especially when your opponent has a rifle pointing at you.
token that was a very noob thing to say
knifing definately requires a skill
Albeit a rather useless skill to develop. Most times when you get knifed (so you could have knife dueled roflll), you were utterly fucked anyway. I’ve never been in a situation where I got knifed (happens occasionally), but could have won had I practiced my knifing skills. Usually you’ll be bandaging multiple wounds, reloading, under fire, AND not know where all your enemies are, etc. So the two situations are:
- you’re going to knife some hapless target (thus you need no skill to kill him, since he will be as described above)
- you’re getting knifed
The best option in both cases is to use a gun instead, since it’s faster and has a higher rate of success. Boring? Sure. But Dailynade is about improving your skill, not how to have more fun with a low skill level, because nobody needs a guide to figure out what’s funny. Dailynade teaches you how to have fun a different way – being GOOD at the game.:)
K sorry
Nice post. The mistake i make is i rush a little 2 much. Ill be fighting one guy and then when i think hes low rush him with my DE and get tagged by one of his teammates.
I’m working on that tho.
my common mistake is “reload/bandage” instead of “bandage/reload” when I’m close to die.
An other common error in turnpike is to insist to rush from north spawn to south spawn from inside offices. If some skilled enemies rush from the other spawn, they always are on advantage, because from south spawn you have full office visibility from the beginning, from north spawn, you can see the opponent just when you pass the corner after WC
Mash reload and bandage at the same time. Sometimes it doesn’t work on high-ping servers, but 99% of the time it will succeed and you’ll save a ton of time. I usually bandage right after getting hit – I do it so soon it’s a bit of a bad habit and will sometimes get me killed. By reloading at the same time, I at least have a full magazine by the time the bandage animation has finished.
I THINK you need to hit bandage very slightly before reload (I have mouse2 as bandage and mouse3 as reload, so the naturally longer time it takes for mouse3 to fully depress takes care of this), but it’s a subconscious motion for me now so I’m not totally sure.
AFAIK from my experience bandage/reloads works well even if you push reload just 0,2 sec after bandaging, vice versa if you push reload first, you have to wait for complete reload before bandaging starts.
I made the Reload, Bandage and then bleed to death while bandaging error too many times to count.
…
Until recently when i made it a habit to just switch to my Pistol before bandaging, saves 1-2 seconds worth of health while still being able to defend my self in a pinch.
Great list by the way!
… oh and i’m occasionally still guilty for point 1-3 xP
Hey Engine,
I know you don’t like me all that much because of our past argument but I think you did a great job on this article. Congrats. Your thoughts about the game are wise and show how much you really know.
Loved the article. It really helped a lot,
Puff
Thanks
Your article “roughly” translated into language of Poles.
Thanks Daily Nade.

I’d like to add to number 4 the uses of kicking the opponent, especially in combo with the knife. It deals a solid 20% and has enough knockback to confuse opponents to let you pull another weapon if you feel like. It can save you from time to time.
everytime i wanna switch to my knife, I accidentally press the console button. to avoid that i want to put my knife on caps lock, but what do i have to type in console?
/bind capslock (and now?)
nice post xD i usually just take a sr8 when getting killed by a sniper and pwne his a**… like on eagle if there are sniper/s at the red cablecar stop and camp there u can just go the left wehen running out the spawn place and the there is a building on the left to wich has a ladder … if u go up there snipers won’t expect u LoL
