8 ways to dominate a Free for All match

I just love Free for All. It’s plenty of fun, especially with lots of players in the server. Usually I play on Free for All servers when my favorites one are full but I found it to be very usefull to improve aim, and overall skills. Here are some tips to dominate the server. Usually there is a kill limit instead of a time limit, so you have to rush to victory before anyone else. Let’s take a look to some advices.

1. Check out for weapons limitation

Some servers have special rules like SR-8 only, Pistols only, Knife only and so on. Check what is available and choose accordingly.

2. Good Equipment

It’s gonna be a mess. So pick up both helmet and kevlar. This will help you survive a bunch of bad guys shooting at you. Also depending on the weapons limitation and the map you may choose to equip the Visor, wich in this case can come in handy. Don’t pick extra ammo because you will likely be dead before need it. If the map is really big (like Intermodal) you can choose to not use the kevlar and use that slot for something else.

3. Good Weapons

The choice of the weapon is related to the map size and of course to weapons limitations. In small and medium maps, if you can choose an automatic rifle go with one with high fire rate (the fire rate is the amount of bullets shot per second), like the M4 or the LR-300. The choice is yours but remember that you will be firing a lot with very long bursts due to the small distance from the enemy. It’s hard to find a slot for a secondary weapon since they will be used for equipment like the kevlar or the helmet. Don’t pick grenades since they are almost useless. Between the laser and the silencer go with the laser since it will increase your accuracy more than the silencer and having the dot floating around is not a big problem and nobody will notice it.
A good setup is: LR-300 (or M4), Laser, Kevlar, Helmet, DE.
Sometimes you will have to drop your weapon in order to get another one with some bullets in it so keep an eye on ammo.

4. Be in the middle of the battle

The key to score is always being in crowded places. If you’re in a remote corner of the map chances are you are going to survive longer but you won’t score that much. Dying is common so don’t be afraid. Listen carefully for where the battle is and also knowing the map helps a lot. Usually three or four players are shooting each other from point blank distance so if you’re in the right place you will likely steal some kills and finish up some wounded enemies.

5. Be ready to \kill yourself

Being fast is one of the key factor to travel around the hot spots in the map. If you get badly wounded (less than 30% of life remaining) chances are you will not be able to sprint and jump that much, so no slides, no wall jump, no nothing. If you get that slow you will likely be taken over by other players. If you are in a pretty isolated part of the map and you are badly wounded, quickly open up the console and type “\kill” (whithout the “”). This will make you respawn with full life and ammo and you will be ready to kill some bad guys again. Don’t worry for that -1 in the kill score. If you are in the right place you can kill up to 3-4 players in less than 15 seconds.

6. Don’t relay on spawn kills

Spawn killing means camping near a spawn point to kill everybody that spawns there. Sounds good on paper but Urban Terror has a feature that prevents that. It’s called spawn protection. If you try to shoot someone who just spawned in a spawn point you will get a message that says that he’s protected by the Spawn Protection Gods. The mighty Spawn Protection Gods will make everyone who just spawned invincible for a good amount of time (from 5 to 10 seconds) or until he fires with his weapon. If you are going to shoot someone who just spawned, wait until he shoots first (speed is required) then kill him. If he’s AFK try to staying near that place to wait untill he gets killable (is that a word?) again. You can also use AFK players to take cover!

7. Get ready to use your knife

From point blank distance you will likely miss due to the fact that sometimes the rifle actually passes through the enemy, or also due to difficult aiming. Also you will run out of ammo pretty fast and reloading with an enemy in front of you is not a good idea. So get ready with your knif e (make shure is not in throwing firing mode) to stab some bad guys!

8. Keep an eye on score

Everyonce in a while press TAB to take a look at the score. If you’re first: good job. If not, looking at your opponent score will rise the will for winning. Wiew it as a race and your performance will increase a lot. Is not only keyboard and mouse, is also a psychological thing.

I hope this tips will help and let me know if they did. Also, you are an experienced player? Share your tips in your comments below!

  2. Funny things to try: The Counter-Strike Training Method Have you ever played Counter-Strike? I did a couple of times. Is quite funny but I can't live with walljumps. In Counter Strike you can't choose weapons from the start of the round. You start with the standard pistol and then you earn money during the round to buy equipment and weapons for the next round. So the first round is very particular since is basically pistol only. Also when you do certain actions like TeamKilling you loose money and it happens that you can't afford any weapon and stick with the standard pistol. I found this method to be funny when applied to Urban Terror and I use it as a training method once in a while when playing on public servers. Let's see how it works!...

    /kill is evil!

Spawn protection is usually 2 seconds, no more.
About /killing, you cant bind it with /bind x kill
    It will be faster…
I go with nades because there so many enemies that nades will give you free kills.
Apart from that, your article is quite good =)

It isn’t as big a deal on FFA (although still annoying) but I’ve leveled a /kick on players for using a binded /kill on our TDM servers. People abuse it to keep someone from getting the point for killing them. It serves very little other purpose but to annoy the other players (or save you from the once a month you get stuck on some badly designed ladder).

The only time I would encourage people to /kill is on jump maps where it just doesn’t matter or when you’re stuck.

It’s a debated subject, but as far as I’m concerned constantly doing /kill is a jerk move akin to team wounding in TDM.

FFA is one of the times I will often use goggles. Depends on the map, but the huge drawback of team colors no longer applies. They’re a little annoying to wear constantly… but in a map with hiding places… they can certainly make the game for you (or put you at a disadvantage to some sniper that IS wearing them if you don’t).

Isn’t #7 just good advice anyway? I moved knife to Z key so it’s always handy in a pinch. :)
